Web Design -
what makes a good website?
When designing
a website, the following points should be taken in to consideration.
They can make the difference between a good website that visitors
will return to or a bad website which visitors may not even be able
to find.
What is the purpose of the website - The purpose
of the website will determine the design, structure and content
of your website, therefore this is the question you need to answer
first of all.
Readability - Most web users don't read web pages;
they scan for keywords; if they find something they are interested
in they will stop and read. Use suitable fonts and backgrounds so
that visitors don't have to strain their eyes to read the text.
Good navigation - If visitors find the navigation
awkward or difficult to follow they will simply give up and go somewhere
else. Visitors should be able to get to virtually any page on the
web site within 2-3 clicks.
Structure - No matter what type of layout you
choose, give your website a feel of consistency; keep menus in the
same place so that visitor instantly know where to find them; use
the same fonts, etc. Visitors like the feel of familiarity.
Content - Content is king, it is the most important
facet of your web site and needs to be given a great deal of consideration.
A content rich website is not only more interesting to visitors;
it also helps to get your website ranked in search engines like
Google
and Yahoo.
